Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everybody!
I hope you all had a great holiday season and were able to incorporate some wonderful music into the mix.

Some of my students performed at Parkwood Court just before Christmas. They played lots of Christmas carols, and there was some singing and even guitar playing! It’s so great to share our music with others in the community. We had a great crowd and I was so proud of my musicians.

Happy November!

Hi Everyone, and Happy November!

Recently, a small group of students and I got an opportunity to perform at Ayre Manor, the Senior’s residence in Sooke. The students, ranging in ages from 6 to 15, played and sang for about an hour to a wonderful group of people .

Imagine a roomful of 25 or so Grandparents! They were the most encouraging and supportive audience. Some loved Chopin, many sang along to “Wonderful World”, “Edelweiss” and of course they couldn’t stop cooing over the littlest one! (to watch a video click here)

I think we enjoyed it as much as they did, and it certainly reminded me of how fast this whole parenting thing goes. They grow up, and we all get older, and maybe wiser, about appreciating the good things in life, like Music, Cookies and Good Company!

I encourage you to sign up for our next performance there on Friday, Nov 21 10:30-11:30am. It is a pro-D day, so perfect for a morning’s outing. Please email Leanna (leannamadill@gmail.com) to let her know if your child can attend.

On another note, don’t be surprised when your child starts coming home in the next week with Christmas Music. It may be two months off yet, but musicians always have to learn their songs early, so they are ready to perform once December hits.

We have been invited to participate/perform in the Sooke Christmas Market, at the Community Hall, on Dec. 6th/7th, so we’ll be putting some fun stuff together for that too!

Hello to all Families returning to music classes!

Before classes start up again, take a look at doing these activities to get your family prepared for the coming year.

With your child, empty out and clean their music bags.

Its a good time to talk with your child about music classes coming up, memories from last year, favourite music things.....
don’t be surprised if they get all excited and want to look at their books, play with the flashcards or a game with you.

Use that enthusiasm to your advantage and go with it. It’s a good way to set the tone for positive music experiences together this year.
You can always finish the clean up part later.

Put back in; their tin sheet and magnetstheir rhythm thingsany flash cards\ games-(go through and organize), their barely used MYC homework book if you have one, a cleaned out binder, and a cleaned out pocket duo-tang if they had one from last year.

Leave all “old”music books at home for now, but don’t get rid of them-keep accessible.
Kids love to (and should) go back over old songs and see “how easy” they are for them now.
it helps them measure their progress.

Please bring cleaned up bag and supplies to your “meet and greet class” –our first week back.

It’s also a good idea to take a thorough look at your piano/keyboard/music area.

As you organize, see if you can find a shelf for music books and supplies close by.
Check out how your piano sounds-any problems with piano or keyboard equipment?

Do you have a proper sturdy bench at the right height, a footstool, good lighting, earphones,a proper working pedal etc....? Anything need repairing? Tuning?
Can you brighten up the area or make it more appealing or functional in some way? A little thought now, could go a long way towards future pleasant practices!

That’s it for now,
Smiles to everyone,
Teacher Trish

Hope your summer has been full of fun, surprises, and relaxation!

Elena got the chance to practice some Chopin on 2 beautiful grand pianos, one in a hotel in Leavenworth, and one at a lodge at Oregon Caves National monument.
